Bomford came to Yale in 2011 from the University of British Columbia where, as founding director of the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems, he established a thriving 60-acre teaching and research farm. As the Sustainable Food Project’s director, Bomford leads Yale’s contribution to a broad movement for change in the way society produces and consumes food. Yale Farm is one of the project’s laboratories — a year-round organic farm supporting the exploration and study of food and agriculture. It produces hundreds of varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, and is home to free-ranging chicken flocks and honeybees. On Fridays in spring and fall, students bake pizzas from an open-hearth wood-fired oven.
